Action (Play on your turn or in showdowns.)
Choose a battlefield where you have units. You may move up to one enemy unit to that battlefield. Then give enemy units there -2 this turn.
What happens when I play Moonfall choosing an enemy unit while I control an empowered Mel, Newly Awakened?
The chosen unit will be given -3 . All other enemy units at the chosen battlefield will be given -2
.
Mel, Newly Awakened’s empowered ability is a replacement effect. It replaces the event of a spell or ability you control giving a unit it chooses -. The event it replaces that with is the spell or ability giving an additional -1
.
Although Moonfall gives - to multiple units, only one of them is chosen, and thus the only event that is eligible to be replaced is the chosen unit being given -2
. It will be replaced with that unit being given -3
. The events of the other units being given -
will not be affected by this replacement effect.
Relevant Rules: 370.1., 370.1.b.
Q: My opponent plays Moonfall targeting my unit and a battlefield where they have a Travelling Merchant on, and the Merchant is the only unit they control on that battlefield. If I Gust the Merchant in response to Moonfall, does my unit still move and receive -2 at the battlefield?
A: No, the unit won’t move and no -2M will be given.
“Where you have units” is a targeting requirement for the chosen battlefield. Upon resolving, if that requirement is not met, the spell will check information about an illegal target, so “that battlefield” and “there” will return null, and the related instructions will be ignored.
