Overzealous Fan

Overzealous Fan

SFD #128

Erratas & Clarifications

Ruling14 avr. 2026

Overzealous Fan: 'When I defend, you may kill me to move an attacking unit to its base.'

  • This is a Defend Trigger (383.4.f). It triggers when Overzealous Fan gains the Defender designation for the first time during a combat (383.4.f.2).

The structure is 'you may [do X] to [do Y]':

  • 'you may' gates placement on the chain (383.3.a).
    • The player chooses whether to put it on the chain or not.
    • 'kill me' is the cost within instructions (742.1).
    • 'move an attacking unit to its base' is the effect.

Per 383.3.b.1 / 742.1.b, the cost (kill Overzealous Fan) **is paid on finalization, not on resolution. **

  • This means Overzealous Fan dies as the trigger is being finalized on the chain, before it resolves, and before anyone can react to it.
  • Per 404.2, the player may decline to pay the cost at step 4.
    • If they decline, the trigger is removed from the chain.
    • If the cost is paid:
      • Overzealous Fan is killed,
      • the trigger is finalized,
      • opponents will be able to react but the Overzealous Fan would already be killed.
      • When it resolves, the chosen attacking unit is moved to its base.

WHAT THAT MEANS:

When the player is making the choice to kill or not their Overzealous Fan, there is no window to react to that choice. It happens during finalization. By the time opponents get Priority to react, he would already be dead and the trigger be a finalized chain item.

For both examples and similar abilities (Irelia Blade Dancer, Overzealous Fan), when the player chooses to add the item to the Chain and pay its cost, the ‘you may’ choice is made at that moment, there is no choice to decline the ability later when it tries to resolve.

Clarification2 avr. 2026

You are forced to pay costs within instructions of an effect to put it on the chain. Therefore, you must kill Overzealous Fan when finalizing its When I Defend trigger.
